mermaidcore
wwmw: what would a mermaid wear
the comeback of mermaid core is said to be dated back to the spring/summer 2021 versace collection and likely due to the 2023 live action remake of the little mermaid and renaissance of shows like h2o. it has inspirations from the aesthetics of y2k as well as coquette. the colors are muted and light specifically blues, greens, and purples and sometimes pinks, whites, and greys. it is obviously inspired by the ocean and such elements so to go for mermaid core you should include pearls, shells, moonstones, opals, and wave like structures. there are a lot of drapes and loose ruffles included in the wardrobe. materials such as, lace, sheer materials, satin, iridescent fabric, also sequins.
sirencore
simply said sirencore is a bolder, more seductive version of mermaid core. themes are glitter, metallic, and the moon. the color scheme includes white, black, dark blue, green, red, and purple.
vintage americana
vintage americana can either be seen as a sub-genre of coquette or one of the influences behind coquette either way vintage americana can be described as an aesthetic based on the romanticization of feminine and vintage elements from the 40s, 50s, and 60s, maybe even up until the 80s. the vintage elements being diners, vintage coke bottles, bubble gum, or picking fruits and flowers. it is very often linked with the lana del rey album born to die because they both romanticize the same era and share the same fashion. the fashion includes patterns such as checkers and gingham, shorts, crop tops, heart shaped glasses, cowboy boots, sneakers, mary janes. the vibe is very summery with the color scheme being red, white, and blue with pops of other colors like pinks and yellows.
farmers daughter
take one
farmers daughter is a subgenre of the coquette aesthetic, inspired by the countryside lifestyle. the elements are soft, innocent, and romantic. personally i see it as a mix between coquette, vintage americana, and cottagecore. the wardrobe includes soft materials, ruffles, buttons, checkers, gingham, florals, and fruit patterns. the color scheme is reds, creams, whites, and brown. the common clothing is sundresses, babydoll dresses/tops, crop tops, overalls, shorts, and cowboy boots. it is also includes a lot of vintage clothing, jewelry, and bags.
fairycore
fairycore was originated on tumblr in the mid-late 2010s. the aesthetic is based upon nature and woodland fantasy. the fairycore ideals include environmental consciousness as well the rejection of capitalism (go thrifting <3). the fairycore aesthetic is a composition of many other eras including the 60s hippie movement, the fashionably unkept elements of 90s grunge, and the gentler 2010s soft grunge. it is also inspired by high fashion and its fantasy clothing. the color scheme is a lot of pastels and muted colors, mainly earth tones. it includes a lot of outdoorsy patterns, distressed clothing, fingerless gloves, torn mittens, fishnet tights, silver jewelry, florals, ruffles, and layering. clothing wise it is fish sleeve blouses, mesh tops, corsets, dresses, maxi skirts, leg warmers, wide leg trousers, chunky shoes, and milkmaid tops.
COTTAGECORE
according to the urban dictionary cottage core is defined as and aesthetic " "inspired by a romanticized interpretation of western agricultural life. It is centered on ideas of simple living and harmony with nature." cottage core was first developed in the 2010s but became popular in 2019-2021 similarly to fairycore this aesthetic also rose as a rejection of capitalism. themes include countryside scenery, baking, frogs mushrooms, handmade crafts, wicker baskets, flowers, and overall the romanticization of a life of isolation. the wardrobe consists mainly of milkmaid and peasant tops and dresses as well as maxi dresses and skirts. the color scheme is browns, greens, yellows, and creams.
"In the cottagecore universe, there are no phones pinging constantly with updates, no urgent work emails, no evenings spent responding to the onerous demands of a tyrannical boss. In fact, there is no labor beyond domestic, and workaday tasks are completed with a gauzy sense of fulfillment." -via The New York Times

downtown girl
the downtown girl is effortlessly cool, she is musical, maybe plays guitar or just a music appreciator, she reads, goes into record stores, and thrifts. the downtown girl aesthetic romanticizes the lifestyle of living in the downtown area of a city, particularly nyc during autumn. this is not to be taken as the uptown girl aesthetic. it plays into other aesthetics such as indie sleaze, model off duty, and rockstar gf. the color scheme includes black, cream, red, brown, and blue. accessories include big headphones, claw clips, cool sunglasses, leg warmers, fleece/black tights, and tote bags. clothing includes oversized sweaters/jackets, mini/denim skirts, band tees, long sleeves, flared jeans, dark jeans, graphic baby tees, converses, and doc martens.
uptown girl
i bet that she knows billy joel
the uptown girl aesthetic contrasts the downtown girl aesthetic. while the downtown girl is effortless and chill the uptown girl has a more expensive taste, though also effortless she immerses herself into the rich lifestyle going to museums, galleries, and fashion shows. the uptown girl aesthetic is classy and elegant. the uptown and downtown girls are similar though, they both romanticize reading and music and city life. the color scheme is whites, creams and blacks. the wardrobe is full of silks and satins, and also includes a lot of bows whether it is hair bows or incorporated into the clothing. the clothing is mary janes, heels, loafers, dresses, mini skirts, blouses, blazers, and stockings, accessories like pearls, berets, diamonds, designer bags, and sunglasses.
NOTHERN PREPPY
northern preppy also known as new england preppy is commonly mistaken for the southern preppy aesthetic when the two are vastly different. the term preppy comes from private preparatory school and the lifestyle of wealthy students who may come from old money families who attend these schools. this aesthetic is based on sophistication, etiquette, academics, and effortless confidence. the color scheme consists of darker, muted, and neutral colors, but specific colors include emerald, blues specifically navy, and reds. patterns include stripes, plaids, tartan, argyle, and nautical themes. the wardrobe includes oxford, polo, collared shirts, blazers, top/trench coats, chunky or knitted sweaters, pleated or knee length pencil skirts, sweater vests, equestrian blouses, college sweatshirts, tennis sneakers, boots, leather gloves, and headbands.

dark academia as an aesthetic is based on the romanticization of education and literature specifically classical literature and a passion for learning. it seems to take inspiration from the universities and prep schools of the 19th century and early 20th century specifially in england. it is often mistaken for other types of academia like chaotic or classical academia. the color scheme is dark and muted, browns, black, cream, and grey it includes materials like plaid, tartan, wool, leather and tweed. the wardrobe includes blouses, sweater vests, blazers, trench coats, slacks, skirts, collared shirts under sweaters, and loafers.

LIGHT ACADEMIA
light academia is the counterpart to dark academia. it is visibly lighter and focuses on more positive themes like dreaminess and romance, whilst staying true to the same themes of dark academia like the passion for literature and education and the romanticization of intellect. the aesthetic seems to have more royal and and ancient greek/roman inspirations especially when it comes to the architecture and decor included in this aesthetic it leans into more of the renaissance, classical, and neo-classical eras,. the color scheme is whites, creams, browns, and golds. the clothing is pretty much the same but with more plaid and florals and other softer and more romantic accessories like hair bows and pearls. it is not the same as romantic academia which focuses on the romantic era which light academia does not primarily focus on.
